AI visibility checker: does ChatGPT name your practice?

Check whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity name your practice when patients ask for a specialist nearby, and who they recommend instead.

By Medfy Editorial TeamUpdated Facts verified 5 min read

This AI visibility checker writes the five questions a patient would ask an AI assistant about your specialty and city, opens each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode (Gemini by copy and paste), and keeps score of how often your practice is named. It's a guided check: the assistants answer live in your own browser and you mark each answer. No patient information is entered or stored.

Run the AI visibility check

  1. Enter your practice name, city (with state or province) and specialty: 18 options from dentist and therapist to podiatrist, including "Other practice". Press Build my AI visibility check.
  2. Open a private browser window and stay signed out if you can. Assistants personalize answers to accounts and history.
  3. For each question, click an assistant. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode open with the question filled in. For Gemini, press Copy and paste it.
  4. Read the answer and mark Named or Not.

Your marks stay in this browser tab and nothing is sent to Medfy. Each question goes to the assistant you open, so never add patient details to it.

Which assistants and questions it uses

Five questions across five assistants gives up to 25 answers. The questions change with your specialty; a therapy practice is asked about anxiety therapy and couples counseling, a med spa about Botox and lip filler.

Illustrative example: a fictional practice, Riverside Family Dental in Austin, TX.

#Question the checker writesWhat it tests
1Who is the best dentist in Austin, TX?An unprompted recommendation
2Recommend a dental office in Austin, TX that is accepting new patients.Availability signals
3Where can I get dental implants in Austin, TX? Who do people recommend?A service plus reputation
4I need teeth whitening near Austin, TX. Which dental offices have good reviews?A second service plus reviews
5What do patients say about Riverside Family Dental in Austin, TX?What assistants say when asked by name

How to read your result

Your AI visibility share is the number of answers that named you divided by the answers you checked. After five marks, the tool suggests next steps in three bands: rarely named (under about a third), sometimes named, and often named (above about two-thirds).

The yes/no is only part of it. For each answer, note:

  • Who is named instead. These are the practices assistants treat as the local default.
  • Which sources are cited. If they're directories or review sites rather than your pages, those listings are shaping the answer.
  • Whether the facts are right. Hours, address, services and "accepting new patients".

Treat any run as a sample. Answers vary by assistant, model version, location, time and sign-in, so write down the date, time and where you ran it.

Why assistants name some practices and not others

Nobody outside these companies knows the exact selection logic. What they document is narrower, and mostly about access to your site:

Our AI visibility guide explains how these sources fit together.

What to fix first

  1. Crawler access. Confirm your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. OpenAI says search-related robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.
  2. A page per service. Questions 3 and 4 pair a service with your city; a page that names both gives assistants something to cite.
  3. Your Google Business Profile. Accurate categories, hours and services.
  4. Consistent details. The same name, address and phone on your site and every listing.
  5. Recent reviews. Asked of every patient, the same way.

One-time check vs weekly tracking

Paid AI-visibility software is priced for brands: advertisers pay about $34.43 a click for "ai visibility checker" (260 US searches a month, keyword difficulty 9), while "ai visibility tool" and "ai visibility" get 880 each (Google Ads Keyword Planner data via DataForSEO, US, 12-month average to Sep 2026). A practice usually needs something simpler: the same questions, asked regularly.

A manual check is a snapshot. Repeat it monthly with the same five questions to see a trend; our AI search statistics page puts the results in context. The full free marketing audit automates part of it: it asks Claude and Gemini, with live web search, whether they name you, and checks that the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini can read your site.

For ongoing tracking, compare AI visibility tracking tools. Medfy's plan asks ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews the questions patients ask every week, and shows whether they name you, who they recommend instead and how that changes. The rest of our free marketing tools cover your website, reviews and budgets.

Frequently asked questions

How does the AI visibility checker work?

You enter your practice name, city and specialty. The checker writes five patient-style questions and gives one-click links to ask each in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode, plus Gemini by copy and paste. You read each answer, mark whether your practice was named, and the page shows the share of answers that named you, with next steps.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time?

Assistants write each answer fresh. The result can change with the model version, the sources a web search returns that day, your location and whether you're signed in. That's why the checker treats any single run as a sample. Use a private window, keep the same five questions, and compare runs over weeks rather than reacting to one answer.

Which AI assistants does it check?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode open with the question already filled in. Gemini opens in a new tab and you paste the question. The free marketing audit runs an automated check with Claude and Gemini using live web search, and Medfy's plan tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews every week.

How often should a practice check its AI visibility?

Monthly is a practical minimum for a manual check, plus after any big change such as a new website, a move or a new service. Use the same five questions each time so results are comparable. Answers shift as models and sources update, so weekly automated tracking shows trends a monthly spot check can miss.
