Marketing a practice in Calgary: demand, costs and rules

Healthcare marketing in Calgary: what local patients search and what a click costs by specialty ('dentist near me' $38.74), AB rules and a sample budget.

By Medfy Editorial TeamUpdated Facts verified 9 min read

Calgary has the most expensive dental clicks in our Canadian data, by a wide margin. "Dentist near me" averages US$38.74 a click, more than double the Canadian average of $17.03, and the plain search "dentist" costs $55.49. If you're weighing dental website design in Calgary, that's the number to start with: every new patient your website and Google listing win on their own is one you didn't pay $38.74 or more a click to reach. Everything else here is cheap by comparison. Walk-in, family doctor, dermatology and psychology clicks cost a few dollars or less. This page covers the searches, the prices, the people, Alberta's privacy and college advertising rules, and a dental budget.

What's searched more, and less, than Calgary's size suggests

Calgary typically accounts for about 5% to 6% of Canadian searches in this data: 6.0% for "dentist near me", 4.9% for walk-in clinics. Three searches run well above that, and one far below:

SearchMonthly searchesShare of Canadian searches
psychologist near me1,0008.3%
chiropractor near me4,4007.3%
orthodontist near me1,3007.2%
registered massage therapist near me5901.0%

Computed from the same Keyword Planner data: Calgary volume ÷ Canadian volume.

The RMT figure is the mirror image of Vancouver, where the same search makes up 20% of Canada's total. Calgary residents search "massage therapy near me" (2,900) far more than "registered massage therapist near me", so a massage clinic here should build pages and ads around the shorter phrase. Psychology, chiropractic and orthodontic practices have more search demand than the city's size predicts. The patient search demand by city data compares these patterns across all 33 metros, and the free marketing audit scores your own practice's visibility.

Dental website design in Calgary: why the numbers favor organic

Google Ads Keyword Planner data via DataForSEO, Calgary (city), Vancouver (city), Toronto (city) and Canada, 12-month average to Sep 2026. Dental implants are an additional search from the same pull (480 searches a month in Calgary).

Every dental search costs roughly two to three times the Canadian average here: 2.9 times for "dentist", 2.5 times for implants, 2.3 times for "dentist near me", 2.2 times for Invisalign. A Calgary dental practice that relies on Google Ads for new patients is paying among the highest prices in our data. One that ranks in the map pack and organically for "dentist" plus its neighborhood keeps that money.

Outside dentistry, clicks are cheap in absolute terms, though not always below average. Dermatology ($1.53) and psychology ($3.32) cost less than the Canadian average; walk-in ($1.82) and family doctor ($1.88) cost more than average but still under two dollars; chiropractic ($5.64) and eye exams ($6.59) sit in between. The guide to what Google Ads cost explains why local competition drives prices like Calgary's dental CPCs.

Who your patients are: Calgary by the numbers

Statistics Canada, 2021 Census of Population, Census Profile, Calgary (census subdivision) (opens in a new tab). The figures cover the City of Calgary, the same area as the search data.

  • 1,306,784 people in 2021, up 5.5% since 2016. The fastest growth of the three Canadian cities we cover. Newcomers need a dentist, family doctor and optometrist, so "accepting new patients" should be easy to find on your site and listing.
  • 13.6% aged 65 or older; median age 38.0. The youngest profile of our Canadian cities. Family, pediatric and working-age services carry more weight in messaging than seniors' care does, though older patients still need clear access and coverage information.
  • Median total household income of $98,000 (CAD) in 2020. The highest of our three Canadian cities, and useful context for how you present services patients pay for themselves, such as Invisalign or cosmetic dentistry.
  • 18.7% speak a non-official language most often at home, led by Punjabi (Panjabi) at 2.8%, Tagalog (Pilipino, Filipino) at 2.1% and Mandarin at 1.8%. No single language dominates, so in-language pages are a case-by-case decision. If your patients ask for Punjabi or Tagalog, translated pages would be your practice's own content, reviewed by fluent staff or a translator, and subject to the same advertising rules as the English site.

Alberta privacy and college advertising rules

Privacy: the Health Information Act and PIPA

Alberta splits health privacy in two. The Health Information Act (HIA) governs "custodians", which the Government of Alberta lists as including Alberta Health Services, physicians, pharmacists and dentists on its PIPA page (opens in a new tab), and physicians, chiropractors and registered nurses on its HIA page (opens in a new tab). The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) covers provincially regulated private-sector organizations and businesses that collect, use or disclose personal information in Alberta. Our guide to Alberta's Health Information Act explains how custodians should handle health information; for marketing, the practical rule is to keep patient health information out of promotional use and ad platforms entirely.

Physicians: CPSA's advertising standard

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta's Advertising standard of practice (opens in a new tab) (reissued January 1, 2021) requires advertising to be accurate, clear and supported by current evidence, to state the practice discipline on the physician's practice permit, and to say clearly when services are not, or may not be, publicly funded through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Disclaimers must be as prominent as the rest of the message. It prohibits:

  • false, incomplete, misleading or deceptive content;
  • claims, endorsements or testimonials about the service or business;
  • disparaging others, or promising better results than another provider unless substantiated to the Registrar's satisfaction;
  • unreasonable expectations of results, including promised or warranted outcomes;
  • inducements such as time-limited prices, discount coupons, gift certificates, prizes or consultation parties.

Physicians must also ensure third-party advertising on their behalf complies, and show in writing that they reviewed and approved it.

Dentists: the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta

The province's dental regulator, the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta, summarizes the rules in its Advertising Statement (opens in a new tab) (November 2023). It quotes section 102 of the Health Professions Act: a regulated member "shall not engage in advertising that is untruthful, inaccurate or otherwise capable of misleading or misinforming the public". It also cites the CDSA Code of Ethics' duty not to misrepresent, embellish or omit information, and federal limits: prescription drug ads to the general public may only state brand name, proper name, common name, price and quantity. Owner, responsible and associate dentists are all accountable for advertising by their staff and by third parties, including marketing agencies.

Email and texts: CASL

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (opens in a new tab) requires express or implied consent for commercial electronic messages, sender identification with contact details, and an unsubscribe mechanism (section 6). Implied consent from an existing business relationship is generally limited to two years. Maximum penalties are $1 million for individuals and $10 million for others. The guide to marketing a clinic in Canada covers the national rules together.

The channels in order for a Calgary practice

  1. Google Business Profile and Maps. For a dentist, a top-three map position for "dentist near me" (14,800 searches a month) is worth more here than in any other Canadian city in our data. Our guide to Google Business Profile for practices covers the fields that matter.
  2. Your website. Pages for each service and for the communities you serve, so the site ranks for "dentist" plus place without ads. For physicians, include the funding notes CPSA requires.
  3. AI assistants. Patients can ask ChatGPT or Gemini for "a family dentist in Calgary's northwest accepting new patients". Our guide to local AI search covers how assistants decide whom to name.
  4. Paid search. Walk-in, family medicine, dermatology, psychology and chiropractic clicks are inexpensive. Dental ads need tight targeting, exact terms and constant search-term review. Physicians can't use discounts or time-limited offers in ads.
  5. Meta. Useful for cosmetic and orthodontic awareness, without testimonials for physicians and with service-focused copy.

A sample monthly budget for a Calgary practice

Hypothetical arithmetic for a general dental practice. CPCs are Keyword Planner averages in USD; the inquiry and booking rates are assumptions, not benchmarks. Replace them with your own.

StepCalgarySame budget in VancouverSame budget in Toronto
Monthly budget, "dentist near me" (USD)$2,000$2,000$2,000
Avg. CPC (USD)$38.74$17.93$15.50
Clicks (budget ÷ CPC)≈ 51≈ 111≈ 129
Calls and forms (assumed 12% of clicks)≈ 6≈ 13≈ 15
New patients (assumed 60% of inquiries)≈ 3.7≈ 8≈ 9
Ad cost per new patient (USD)≈ $540≈ $250≈ $220

The Calgary practice pays more than twice as much per new patient as the same practice in Vancouver or Toronto. That's the strongest argument in our data for investing in a dental website and Google listing that bring patients in without a per-click fee. By contrast, a walk-in or family clinic spending US$500 on "walk in clinic near me" at $1.82 gets about 275 clicks.

How Medfy works for Calgary practices

Medfy is software, not a Calgary agency. It has no Alberta office, doesn't claim local clients, and charges the same in every city, in USD:

  • $349 USD a month base plan: your website rebuilt and hosted on your own domain, fast, with a page per service, structured data and HIPAA-compliant forms; weekly researched articles you approve; local pages and technical SEO; first-party analytics for calls, forms, booking clicks and directions; and Google reporting in one view.
  • Add-ons: Google Ads management, $199 a month, with daily search-term reviews and negative keywords (useful at $38.74 a click); Meta ads with AI creatives, $199 a month; HIPAA AI chat widget, $49 a month. Ad spend is paid to Google and Meta directly, never marked up.
  • Canadian data storage: patient information from forms, chat and the inbox is kept in separate, encrypted HIPAA databases in the US or Canada, and Canadian practices can keep it in Canada. Medfy signs a BAA with your practice before any patient data flows.
  • Weekly AI visibility tracking that can include local questions such as "best dentist in Calgary" (illustrative).

Medfy builds sites in English; translated pages are your practice's own content. Plan details are on Medfy pricing; other cities are under healthcare marketing by city.

The Health Information Act governs custodians such as physicians, dentists and pharmacists; PIPA covers other personal information held by private businesses. CPSA's advertising standard bars testimonials, inducements and unsubstantiated superiority claims for physicians, and the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta requires truthful, non-misleading dental advertising. CASL governs commercial email and texts. Confirm how each applies with a qualified advisor.
