Google reviews disappeared? Causes and fixes for practices

Why Google reviews vanish from a practice profile (spam filters, policy removals, merged or duplicate listings, glitches) and what you can check or appeal.

By Medfy Editorial TeamUpdated Facts verified 7 min read

Google's documented causes and fixes checked October 23, 2026.

When Google reviews disappeared from your practice's profile overnight, the cause is usually one Google documents: a policy or spam removal, a merged or duplicate listing, a profile that was suspended and reinstated, or a restriction placed on a profile for fake engagement. Sometimes nothing is gone at all and it's just a display delay. Work through the checks below before you contact anyone, and especially before you pay a service that offers to "restore" reviews.

Practice owners search for this often: "google reviews disappeared" gets 260 searches a month in the US and "google review not showing" 110 (Google Ads Keyword Planner data via DataForSEO, US, 12-month average to Sep 2026).

First check: your profile or a display glitch?

Start by separating "removed" from "not showing yet" or "not showing here."

  1. Open your Business Profile and select Read reviews. Count what's there. This is the profile's own record, signed in as the owner.
  2. Search your practice on a phone in a private browser window, signed out, and compare the count on Google Search and Google Maps.
  3. Check the timing of new reviews. Google's missing reviews page (opens in a new tab) says reviews "are checked to ensure they comply with our policies," and "this process might take a few days, which can delay a review's appearance on your profile."
  4. Check the score separately from the count. Google's review score page (opens in a new tab) says a new review can take up to two weeks to be reflected in your rating.
  5. Ask whether a patient couldn't post. Google notes that "customers who use older phones or software might have trouble when they try to leave reviews" and recommends updating the Maps app.

Then answer four questions, because each points to a different cause below: Did the count drop, or did reviews never appear? Did you recently merge, move, rename or get suspended? Did the practice recently send a burst of review requests, or did staff or family post reviews? Did Google email you about a policy violation?

Screenshot the profile with the date visible. You'll want a record whichever route you take.

Reviews removed by Google's spam filters

Google states the usual reason plainly: "Usually, reviews are removed for policy violations like spam or inappropriate content." Its reporting help page (opens in a new tab) explains that Google "uses automated spam detection" to remove reviews identified as spam, and adds: "Occasionally, the system may also mistakenly remove legitimate reviews. If this happens, contact support for assistance."

Google doesn't publish how its spam detection decides, and you won't get a list of which signals tripped it. What you can do:

  • List the missing reviews from your screenshots or records: reviewer display name, date and star rating.
  • Contact Business Profile support with that list and say you believe legitimate reviews were removed.
  • Don't ask patients to repost en masse. A wave of reposted reviews can look like the "unusual volumes or patterns" Google's policy removes (see below). Keep your normal request routine.

The same missing reviews page is firm about the other side: "Reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored."

Duplicate and merged listings

Profiles are the most common structural cause, and the one practices can actually fix.

Duplicates. Google's duplicate profiles page (opens in a new tab) says a profile can be flagged as a duplicate when a verified profile already exists for the business, when several profiles share an address, or when several exist for the same business offering different services, and that "duplicate profiles don't appear in Search or Maps." Reviews left on a duplicate are effectively invisible. If you're not sure whether your practice has more than one listing, our guide to duplicate listings shows how to check before you claim or create anything.

Merges. The same page says that when profiles are merged, their reviews are combined, but "replies to reviews may be lost." Merge requests go through a suggested edit on Google Maps and are subject to review. Google's missing reviews page adds that after a merge, "it might take a few days for reviews from both profiles to display on Search and Maps."

Moves, new owners and renames. Google's review transfer page (opens in a new tab) says reviews transfer automatically when a business moves and keeps the same name. If you unintentionally created and verified a new profile because of a move or ownership change, you can contact Google to transfer reviews from the old one. Reviews stay with the business under new management, but a name change beyond minor edits makes it a new business.

Suspension and reinstatement. Google's missing reviews page notes that "sometimes reviews might be removed after a Business Profile is reinstated" and says to contact support if that happens. Google's suspended profile help (opens in a new tab) also warns: "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business." A replacement profile starts with zero reviews. If your profile is suspended now, start with our guide to suspended profiles.

Policy violations, including solicitation patterns

Google's content policy (opens in a new tab) removes several kinds of reviews that a practice may have collected in good faith:

  • "Content exhibiting unusual volumes or patterns of review contributions that are indicative of efforts to manipulate a place's rating." A practice that emails its whole patient list in one afternoon, after two quiet years, can produce exactly that pattern.
  • Reviews posted because of an incentive, "such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services."
  • Reviews based on a conflict of interest, including "current or former employment" and "familial relationships." Staff reviews, and reviews from staff members' relatives, get removed even when they're sincere.
  • Selective solicitation. Google bans merchants from "selectively solicit[ing] positive reviews from customers."

When Google finds fake engagement, its restrictions page (opens in a new tab) says it may go further than removing individual reviews. It can stop the profile from receiving new reviews "for set period of time," unpublish existing reviews for a set period, and show a warning telling consumers that fake reviews were removed. Google says it emails the owner before applying a restriction.

If your practice uses review-request software, check for features that send the Google link only to satisfied patients. The solicitation rules guide explains what to look for.

Reviews you can appeal, and how

Different causes have different routes. None of them involves paying a third party.

What happenedRoute Google documents
Legitimate reviews removed by automated spam detectionContact Business Profile support
Reviews missing after a profile was reinstatedContact Business Profile support
Reviews unpublished or new reviews blocked under a fake-engagement restrictionAppeal through the link on the restrictions page; Google re-reviews the profile and any context you provide
Reviews removed for a policy violationNot restored, per Google
Reviews on an old or duplicate profile after a moveContact Google to transfer reviews to the current profile
Reviews not yet showing after a mergeWait a few days, then contact support

For a restriction appeal, be specific: when the reviews were collected, how you asked (one standard message to every patient), and what you've changed, such as switching off a gating feature. If the issue is a review you reported that Google kept up, that's a different flow, covered in review removal and appeals.

Protecting reviews going forward

Most disappearances are preventable with a few habits:

  1. Ask every patient, steadily. A standing weekly routine avoids spikes and selective asking.
  2. No incentives of any kind. No discounts, raffles or gift cards for reviews.
  3. No staff or family reviews. Tell new hires during onboarding.
  4. One profile per location. Never create a new profile to escape a problem; fix or appeal the existing one.
  5. Re-check after any change. After a move, rename, merge or reinstatement, confirm your count within a week and again after two weeks.
  6. Keep a dated record. Note rating and review count monthly, and screenshot the reviews page each quarter.

For a dated outside record, Medfy's free marketing audit captures your current rating and review count as part of its Google listing score, so a later drop is easy to spot. Medfy doesn't manage, restore or request reviews. For the rest of the review picture (replies, removals, vendors), see the online reviews guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my Google reviews suddenly disappear?

Google documents a handful of causes: removals for policy violations such as spam, automated spam detection that occasionally removes legitimate reviews too, merged profiles whose reviews take a few days to show, removals after a profile is reinstated, and restrictions on profiles caught with fake engagement. First check whether the reviews are gone from your Business Profile itself or just not showing on one device.

Can deleted Google reviews be restored?

Sometimes. Google says reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored. But if its automated spam detection removed a legitimate review by mistake, or reviews vanished after your profile was reinstated, Google says to contact Business Profile support for help. Keep dated screenshots of your reviews so you can show support exactly which reviews disappeared and when.

Do reviews move over when two listings are merged?

Yes. Google's duplicate profiles page says that when profiles are merged, their reviews are combined, though replies to reviews may be lost. Its missing reviews page adds that reviews from both profiles can take a few days to display on Search and Maps. Merge requests go through a suggested edit on Google Maps, and Google reviews every request.
