AI marketing for addiction treatment: what helps and what to avoid

AI marketing for addiction treatment providers: how patients use AI assistants, LegitScript and Part 2, and which AI tools are HIPAA-safe.

By Medfy Editorial TeamUpdated Facts verified 7 min read

AI marketing for addiction treatment is mostly about the public side of your program: whether AI assistants describe it accurately, how fast your team can produce honest pages for patients and families, and how cleanly you report results. Searches for the topic itself are still below Keyword Planner's reporting floor, so demand is small and early. The patients are already here, though, and so are the rules.

In short: AI can help a treatment program get described accurately by AI assistants and write clearer pages faster. It cannot get you around LegitScript certification, it must never see Part 2 records without the right agreements, and AI "lead gen" paid per admission is a patient-brokering risk. Keep intake and clinical conversations human.

What AI marketing means for a treatment center practice

For a treatment program, AI marketing covers three jobs:

  1. Being named correctly when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews where to get help.
  2. Producing content faster: drafts of level-of-care pages, insurance explainers and family guides that a clinician reviews before publishing.
  3. Reading results: turning aggregate call and form counts into a weekly picture of what's working.

It does not mean AI talking to people in crisis, AI deciding who gets admitted, or AI tools holding intake data. The rules on our addiction treatment marketing guide apply to everything AI touches. For the general picture across specialties, see AI marketing for medical practices.

How patients use ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews to choose a treatment center

People and their families ask AI assistants the same things they ask search engines, in longer sentences. The demand behind those questions is large: "methadone clinic near me" draws about 22,200 US searches a month, "detox near me" 14,800, "iop near me" 14,800 and "suboxone doctor near me" 9,900 (Google Ads Keyword Planner data via DataForSEO, US, 12-month average to Sep 2026).

Illustrative examples of prompts a patient or family member might type:

  • "Is there an evening IOP near Fort Collins for someone who works days?"
  • "Where can I get Suboxone in Boise without waiting weeks?"
  • "Which outpatient alcohol programs in Toledo take Aetna?"
  • "What should we ask a rehab before my son starts treatment?"

Assistants build answers from what they can find and read: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories such as SAMHSA's FindTreatment.gov, and what others write about you. Nobody can promise that an assistant will recommend a particular program. What you can control is whether your levels of care, medications, insurance, hours and location are stated plainly and consistently everywhere. Our guide to AI visibility for practices explains how to check.

Certification and platform rules come before any AI tool

AI makes ads faster to produce. It doesn't make them allowed.

AI copy tools also miss category rules. Ask one for a detox ad and you may get "Get sober fast, guaranteed" or "Struggling with addiction?", which break Google's misrepresentation rules and Meta's ban on implying a viewer's condition. See addiction treatment advertising for the full rule set.

Medfy is not LegitScript-certified and does not provide certification.

42 CFR Part 2 and AI: patient records stay out

42 CFR Part 2 protects records that identify someone as having applied for or received SUD diagnosis, treatment or referral at a covered program (42 CFR 2.11 (opens in a new tab)). The 2024 final rule took effect April 16, 2024, with compliance required by February 16, 2026 (Federal Register (opens in a new tab); HHS fact sheet (opens in a new tab), checked October 22, 2026).

Part 2 is stricter than HIPAA: disclosures generally need written patient consent, and vendors that process records need agreements such as a qualified service organization agreement. A HIPAA business associate agreement alone may not settle the question. In practice:

  • Never paste names, inquiry details, call notes, recordings or census data into an AI tool to "write follow-ups" or "analyze leads".
  • Don't connect AI chat or transcription tools to intake lines without counsel approving the product and the agreements.
  • Use AI on public content and aggregate numbers only.

Our 42 CFR Part 2 and marketing guide covers consent, tracking and vendors in detail.

AI lead-generation vendors and patient-brokering laws

"AI-powered admissions" vendors often sell the oldest arrangement in this field with new software: payment per call, per qualified lead or per admission. The technology doesn't change the law.

The federal Eliminating Kickbacks in Recovery Act (18 U.S.C. § 220 (opens in a new tab)) criminalizes paying or receiving remuneration for referrals to treatment facilities, recovery homes and labs, with fines up to $200,000 and up to 10 years in prison per occurrence. Florida's Patient Brokering Act (opens in a new tab) adds felony penalties, and other states have their own laws. Google's addiction services policy also covers lead generators and referral agencies, and LegitScript won't certify them.

Red flags: per-admission pricing, "exclusive" leads from a national helpline, AI chatbots answering in a generic brand's name, and vendors that won't say who owns the phone numbers. Read patient brokering rules, and confirm any arrangement with counsel.

Which AI tools are safe with patient information

Consumer AI chat accounts are not covered by a business associate agreement. Vendors offer BAAs only for specific business products, and only once configured:

VendorBAA available for (as checked October 22, 2026)
AnthropicClaude Enterprise after the owner enables HIPAA settings and accepts the BAA, and the API under a signed BAA (source (opens in a new tab)); not consumer Free, Pro or Max
GoogleWorkspace services on its HIPAA Included Functionality list, including some Gemini features in Gmail, after accepting the BAA (source (opens in a new tab))
MicrosoftIn-scope enterprise services, including Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat in commercial Office 365, via its Data Protection Addendum (source (opens in a new tab))

For a Part 2 program, a BAA is the floor, not the ceiling. See whether ChatGPT is HIPAA compliant and our HIPAA and AI guides.

How Medfy uses AI for addiction treatment

The limits come first. Medfy does not provide LegitScript certification. Its commitments cover HIPAA-protected data under a BAA, and its handling of 42 CFR Part 2 records is not confirmed, so Medfy makes no Part 2 claim, and substance-use intake should stay in your program's own Part 2-compliant systems. That includes the forms, chat and inbox features below.

Within those limits, these are Medfy's facts:

  • $349/month base plan: your website rebuilt and hosted on your own domain; automated SEO with researched articles drafted every week from MedlinePlus and PubMed, approved by you or auto-published; AI visibility tracking that asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews patient questions weekly and shows whether they name you and who they name instead; first-party analytics including visits from AI assistants; an AI CMO dashboard with a weekly brief; and a patient CRM and inbox.
  • Add-ons: Google Ads management ($199/month) and Meta ads with AI creatives ($199/month), usable for treatment ads only once you hold certification and platform approval; a HIPAA AI chat widget ($49/month) covered by your BAA.
  • Billing: monthly, cancel anytime; ad spend paid directly to Google and Meta, never marked up.

Medfy doesn't answer phones, send email or SMS marketing, run review requests or post to social media. The free AI visibility check in Medfy's free audit asks Claude and Gemini whether they name your program, reading public information only.

Frequently asked questions

Can addiction treatment centers use AI in marketing?

Yes, for public-facing work: drafting service pages and family guides, checking whether AI assistants describe your program accurately, and summarizing aggregate results. Every draft needs human review against FTC, Google and Meta rules, and no patient or inquiry data should go into an AI tool without the right agreements. Treatment ads still require LegitScript certification and platform approval, whoever writes them.

Does AI change LegitScript requirements?

No. Google requires US addiction treatment advertisers to be certified through LegitScript and approved by Google, and Meta requires LegitScript certification plus written permission. That applies whether a person or an AI tool writes and runs the ads. AI-generated campaigns from an uncertified program are still uncertified ads, and AI lead-generation vendors fall under the same Google policy as referral agencies.

Can Part 2 records be used in AI tools?

Not casually. Records that identify someone as having applied for or received SUD care at a Part 2 program can be disclosed only with patient consent or under a specific exception, and vendors that process them need agreements such as a qualified service organization agreement. Consumer AI chat tools have no such agreement. Keep names, inquiries, call notes and recordings out of AI tools unless counsel has approved the product and the paperwork.

Some are structured legally, many are risky. If a vendor is paid per call, per lead or per admission, federal EKRA (18 U.S.C. § 220) and state laws such as Florida's Patient Brokering Act may apply, whatever technology it uses. Lead generators are also ineligible for LegitScript certification. Prefer flat fees for defined work in channels you own, and confirm any arrangement with counsel before signing.
